Failure to change your tires risk

With the first little bits of snow falling north of Toronto last night, I was reminded that I need to get snow tires this year. Tires are one of those purchases we make grudgingly. You spend a lot of money on them so we hate having to change them. Haven’t we all asked: “C’mon, can’t I drive on them one more season!” But in the end we know we (insert best Homer Simpson sarcastic voice) “HAVE to change our tires for ‘safety reasons’…” and then we pout all the way to the store.

So how do you know when you have to change them?

  • The tread on your tires should never fall below 1/16 of an inch (1.6 millimeters) in depth.
  • Tread wear indicator bars built into them, gradually begins to appear as the tread wears down.
  • Distinct cuts or grooves appear in the sidewall.
  • Bulges or blisters that “ are similar to an aneurysm” pop up.
  • They start vibrating too much.

By the way, I get all my tires at Steve’s Tire, 1950 Hwy 7, Concord, ON L4K 1W5.
